A CURRICULUM OUTLINE AND COURSE MATERIALS FOR A 1-WEEK TRAINING PROGRAM DESIGNED TO DEVELOP CRISIS INTERVENTION SKILLS IN POLICE OFFICERS ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE TRAINING PROGRAM, WHICH EMPHASIZES EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING THROUGH PARTICIPATION IN ROLE PLAY AND OTHER EXERCISES, WAS COMPLETED BY 130 OFFICERS FROM 18 WISCONSIN POLICE DEPARTMENTS. IN GENERAL, THE PROGRAM WAS WELL RECEIVED AND RATED HIGHLY BY THE PARTICIPANTS. THE WISCONSIN EXPERIENCE INDICATES THAT THE FOLLOWING FACTORS ARE IMPORTANT IN THE EFFECTIVE IMPLEMENTATION OF CRISIS INTERVENTION TRAINING: TOP COMMAND SUPPORT; LINE SUPERVISION THAT EMPHASIZES RESOLUTION OF CONFLICT SITUATIONS WITH A MINIMUM OF POLICE INTERVENTION; AND SUPERVISION TO ENSURE THAT POLICE OFFICERS DO NOT BECOME OVERLY INVOLVED IN CONFLICTS FOR PERSONAL REASONS. DAILY COURSE OUTLINES, HANDOUTS, FORMS, AND DESCRIPTIONS OF AUDIOVISUAL MATERIALS USED IN THE TRAINING PROGRAM ARE PROVIDED. FOR AN EVALUATION OF THE TRAINING PROGRAM AS IMPLEMENTED IN WISCONSIN, SEE NCJ-44599. (LKM)
