THE AUTHOR EXPLORES THE CAREERS AND ILLEGAL BEHAVIOR PATTERNS OF COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS BASED ON INFORMATION SUPPLIED BY MEMBERS OF GAMBLERS ANONYMOUS AND OTHER CONCERNED INDIVIDUALS.
Abstract
THE 'CHASE' BEGINS WHEN A GAMBLER BETS EITHER TO PAY EVERYDAY BILLS THAT ARE DUE OR TO 'GET EVEN' FROM A FALL. A GAMBLER CAN CHASE ON A SHORT-TERM OR LONG-TERM BASIS; THOSE WHO ARE LOCKED INTO THE LONG-TERM CHASE ARE COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS. THE AUTHOR DISCUSSES THE GAMBLER'S DESIRE FOR 'ACTION,' THE PREPARATION, 'GETTING DOWN,' THE INVOLVEMENT WITH THE SETTING ITSELF, AND THE RESULTS. FURTHER CHAPTERS DEAL WITH THE GAMBLER'S FAMILY; OCCUPATION AND GAMBLING; THE BOOKMAKER AND HIS BUSINESS RELATIONS; GETTING MONEY FROM LENDING INSTITUTIONS; GETTING MONEY THROUGH THE GAMBLING SETTING; CRIME, OPTIONS, AND CONCERNS; ABSTINENCE-AND-RELAPSE CYCLES AMONG COMPULSIVE GAMBLERS; AND THE SPIRAL OF OPTIONS (OPTIONS INCLUDING ALL THOSE AVENUES A GAMBLER USES TO OBTAIN MONEY TO CONTINUE HIS HABIT) AND INVOLVEMENT IN COMPULSIVE GAMBLING. APPENDIXES CONTAIN THE RESEARCH PROCESS, A GAMBLER ANONYMOUS PAMPHLET, AND A CHART LISTING THE ORDER IN WHICH OFFENSES WERE COMMITTED BY THE GAMBLERS INTERVIEWED. REFERENCES, NOTES, AND AN INDEX AND GLOSSARY REFERENCE ARE INCLUDED.
