THE DEVELOPMENT, IMPLEMENTATION, AND EVALUATION OF FIVE 4-DAY TRAINING INSTITUTES DESIGNED TO PREPARE POLICE MANAGEMENT PERSONNEL TO CONDUCT WORKSHOPS ON DWI (DRIVING WHILE INTOXICATED) ENFORCEMENT ARE DOCUMENTED.
Abstract
DETAILS OF THE METHODS USED TO PLAN THE INSTITUTES, CHOOSE THE TRAINING SITES, AND DEVELOP THE COURSE OUTLINE AND TRAINING MATERIALS ARE PRESENTED. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE INSTITUTE AT EACH OF THE FIVE SITES IS DESCRIBED. THE RESULTS OF STUDENT AND INSTRUCTOR EVALUATIONS OF THE INSTITUTES ARE REPORTED, TOGETHER WITH RESPONSES TO FOLLOWUP SURVEYS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THREE OF THE FIVE INSTITUTES WERE OUTSTANDINGLY SUCCESSFUL AND THAT THE OTHER TWO, THOUGH LESS EFFECTIVE, PROVIDED MEANINGFUL LEARNING EXPERIENCES. NEARLY ALL INSTITUTE PARTICIPANTS EXPRESSED AN INTEREST IN USING SOME PART OF THE DWI CURRICULUM PACKAGE UPON RETURN TO THEIR JURISDICTION. MANY INSTITUTE PARTICIPANTS DID NOT MEET THE ESTABLISHED CRITERIA FOR INSTRUCTOR-STUDENTS; I.E., MANY WERE NOT EXPERIENCED INSTRUCTORS WHO ACTUALLY PLANNED TO CONDUCT WORKSHOPS IN THEIR AGENCIES. RECOMMENDATIONS WITH REGARD TO ENROLLMENT, FACILITIES, ACTIVITIES, AND FOLLOWUP FOR FUTURE INSTITUTES ARE OFFERED. COPIES OF TRAINING MATERIALS, COURSE OUTLINES, AGENDAS, EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRES, AND OTHER SUPPORTING MATERIALS ARE PROVIDED.
