Abstract
THE TRAINING SESSION, ORGANIZED BY THE UNITED NATIONS UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE UNITED NATIONS DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY, WAS ATTENDED BY REPRESENTATIVES FROM 15 COUNTRIES OF AFRICA, ASIA, LATIN AMERICA, AND THE MIDDLE EAST. INTRODUCTORY REMARKS ARE FOLLOWED BY A SECTION ON DEVELOPMENT AND CRIME, WHICH COVERS THE ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL COSTS OF CRIME AND OF UNBALANCED DEVELOPMENT, AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF CRIME TO URBANIZATION AND INDUSTRIALIZATION. OTHER SECTIONS DISCUSS THE BASIC PRINCIPLES OF PLANNING FOR CRIME PREVENTION AND CONTROL, THE NEED FOR COORDINATION AND INTERDISCIPLINARY COOPERATION IN LONG-TERM PLANNING FOR CRIME PREVENTION, METHODS AND TECHNIQUES OF CRIME PREVENTION PLANNING (WITH EMPHASIS ON QUANTITATIVE APPROACHES), AND EVALUATION OF PROGRESS IN PLANNING FOR CRIME PREVENTION AND CONTROL. OTHER DISCUSSIONS COVER THE USE OF RESEARCH RESULTS IN POLICY FORMULATION AND PLANNING, TRAINING FOR PLANNING IN CRIME PREVENTION AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE, ENLISTING COMMUNITY SUPPORT OF AND PARTICIPATION IN CRIME PREVENTION PLANNING, AND THE NEED FOR REGIONAL AND INTERREGIONAL COLLABORATION IN THE PROMOTION OF CRIME PREVENTION PLANNING. CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS ADOPTED BY TRAINING PARTICIPANTS RELATIVE TO EACH OF THE DISCUSSION TOPICS ARE ENUMERATED. A LIST OF PARTICIPANTS IS PROVIDED. (LM)
