Abstract
THIS SECOND IN A SERIES OF BOOKLETS DEVELOPED FOR THE WORKING JUVENILE POLICE OFFICER DEALS WITH PRACTICAL JUVENILE POLICY. IT WAS DEVELOPED BY THE MISSOURI COUNCIL ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE IN COOPERATION WITH THE MISSOURI POLICE JUVENILE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION. THE CHAPTER ON POLICE-SCHOOL RELATIONS SUMMARIZES STATE LAW, PRESENTS POLICIES DEVELOPED BY LARGER POLICE DEPARTMENTS, COVERS QUESTIONING OF JUVENILES AT SCHOOL (TO BE AVOIDED IF POSSIBLE), TAKING OF JUVENILES INTO CUSTODY AT SCHOOL (MUST HAVE COURT ORDER UNLESS FELONY IS INVOLVED), AND POLICE-SCHOOL LIAISON PROGRAMS. THE 'RULES OF PRACTICE AND PROCEDURE IN JUVENILE COURTS' SET FORTH BY THE SUPREME COURT OF MISSOURI, EFFECTIVE AUGUST 1, 1976, ARE REPRINTED. THESE COVER RIGHTS OF JUVENILES, REQUIREMENTS FOR HEARINGS, REQUIREMENTS FOR RECORDS, RULE FOR TRANSFER TO ADULT STATUS, AND CONDUCT OF THE COURT PROCEDURES. ANOTHER CHAPTER EXPLAINS THE PROGRAM FOR POLICE JUVENILE OFFICER CERTIFICATION. THE SECTION ON THE ANNUAL REPORT AS AN EVALUATION TOOL SUGGESTS WAYS TO KEEP RECORDS TO ALERT POLICE TO HIGH-CRIME AREAS OR TIMES OF GREATEST ACTIVITY. A FORM IS GIVEN FOR A REPORT WHICH IS ALSO AN EVALUATION. THE FINAL CHAPTER PRESENTS THE 1976 SURVEY OF THE STATUS OF POLICE JUVENILE UNITS IN MISSOURI: 32 UNITS HAVE JUVENILE DIVISIONS, THESE EMPLOY 161 FULL-TIME AND 14 PART-TIME PERSONS, AND AN ADDITIONAL 25 DEPARTMENTS WERE CONSIDERING A JUVENILE DIVISION, UNIT, OR PART-TIME/FULL-TIME OFFICER WITHIN THE NEXT 12 MONTHS.
