Abstract
THE REPORT OPENS WITH A SUMMARY OF THE HISTORY, ORGANIZATION, GOALS, AND ACTIVITIES OF THE MISDEMEANANT CORRECTIONS ASSOCIATION OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON. THE FOLLOWING SERVICES AND PROGRAMS PROVIDED BY MISDEMEANANT PROBATION DEPARTMENTS ARE DISCUSSED: PRESENTENCE INVESTIGATIONS AND REPORTS; PROBATION SUPERVISION; COMMUNITY SERVICE WORK PROGRAMS (ALTERNATIVES TO JAIL SENTENCES OR FINES); INVOLVEMENT OF CITIZENS AS VOLUNTEER PROBATION WORKERS; WORK RELEASE PROGRAMS; BAIL STUDIES AND INDIGENCY REVIEWS; RESTITUTION TO VICTIMS; SUPERVISION OF FINE AND CHILD SUPPORT COLLECTION; PRETRIAL DIVERSION AND DEFERRED PROSECUTION; REFERRALS TO COMMUNITY TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR PERSONAL, EMOTIONAL, ALCOHOL, AND DRUG PROBLEMS; AND ALCOHOL INFORMATION SCHOOLS AND TREATMENT PROGRAMS. A TABLE AND GRAPHS DEPICTING THE ACTIVITIES OF THE DEPARTMENTS ARE INCLUDED. ONE GRAPH DEPICTS THE IMPACT OF THE PROBATION DEPARTMENTS BY SHOWING HOW MANY 'PRISONER DAYS' WOULD BE ADDED TO THE LOCAL JAILS WERE THE 14,408 OFFENDERS REFERRED TO THE PROBATION DEPARTMENTS SENTENCED INSTEAD TO 2, 5, OR 10 DAYS IN CUSTODY.
