THE METHODS AND FINDINGS OF A PROJECT INVOLVING THE DIAGNOSIS OF LEARNING DISABILITIES IN A SAMPLE OF 250 YOUTHS HELD AT A JUVENILE DETENTION FACILITY IN SONOMA COUNTY, CALIF., ARE SUMMARIZED AND EVALUATED.
Abstract
THE STUDY SAMPLE CONSISTED OF 183 MALES AND 67 FEMALES BETWEEN THE AGES OF 11 AND 18. BOTH STATUS OFFENDERS AND DELINQUENTS WERE INCLUDED. IN INTERVIEWS, THE SUBJECTS PROVIDED INFORMATION ON THE OFFENSE THAT RESULTED IN THEIR INCARCERATION, PRIOR RECORD, FAMILY SITUATION, SCHOOL PERFORMANCE AND ATTENDANCE, AND PHYSICAL CONDITION. THE SUBJECTS THEN COMPLETED A TEST DESIGNED TO EVALUATE I.Q., READING, AND OTHER LANGUAGE SKILLS. ON THE BASIS OF THEIR TEST SCORES, THE YOUTHS WERE CLASSIFIED AS DEVELOPMENTALLY DISABLED (13 PERCENT), LEARNING DISABLED (49 PERCENT), OR NOT LEARNING DISABLED (38 PERCENT). THE IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS ARE DISCUSSED. A BRIEF EVALUATION OF THE PROJECT IS PRESENTED. SUPPORTING TABULAR DATA AND A COPY OF THE TEST INSTRUMENT ARE OMITTED. (LKM)
