Abstract
THE FOUNDATIONS AND BASIC ORGANIZATION OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ARE DESCRIBED. THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROCESS IS TRACED FROM ARREST THROUGH SENTENCING. RESTRAINTS PLACED ON POLICE OFFICERS WITH REGARD TO SEARCH AND SEIZURE ARE DISCUSSED, WITH REFERENCE TO THE DEFENDANT'S RIGHT TO ATTACK ILLEGAL POLICE PROCEDURES IN COURT. OTHER CHAPTERS DISCUSS CONFESSIONS, IDENTIFICATION OF SUSPECTS BY WITNESSES, TRIAL PROCEDURES, AND SENTENCE AND APPEAL -- ALL WITH EMPHASIS ON THE PERSPECTIVE OF THE DEFENDANT. CONTROVERSIES CONCERNING REHABILITATION PROGRAMS AND CAPITAL PUNISHMENT ARE NOTED. COMMON COMPLAINTS ABOUT THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ARE DISCUSSED, AND THE MAJOR ADVANTAGES OF THE SYSTEM ARE POINTED OUT. (LKM)
