A BASIC OVERVIEW OF A FULL ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION INCLUDING TYPES OF INVESTIGATIVE ANALYSIS, PLANNING FOR DEALING WITH ACCIDENTS, CONTRIBUTORY FACTORS, AND THE PROCESS OF WRITING A REPORT IS PROVIDED.
Abstract
THE NECESSARY INFORMATION TO CONDUCT AN ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION FROM BEGINNING TO END IS DETAILED. THE BOOK FOCUSES ON BASIC CONCEPTS, FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES, AND ELEMENTARY AND INTERMEDIATE TECHNIQUES. THE INFORMATION IS BRIEF AND GENERAL; EXTENSIVE INVESTIGATION PROCEDURES ARE NOT INCLUDED. THE TEXT IS INTENDED FOR THE PERSON WHO IS SUDDENLY FACED WITH THE TASK OF BEING THE SOLE INVESTIGATOR OF AN ACCIDENT, BUT IT COULD ALSO BE HELPFUL TO A MEMBER OF AN INVESTIGATIVE BODY SUCH AS A BOARD OF INQUIRY. FOR THE EXPERIENCED INVESTIGATOR, IT WILL SERVE AS A REVIEW OF PRINCIPLES AND A CHECKLIST. THE TEXT IS ALSO USEFUL FOR THE TEACHING OF SPECIALIZED ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION. TOPICS COVERED INCLUDE ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES; PREACCIDENT PLANNING; ORGANIZING AND MANAGING THE INVESTIGATION; CONTRIBUTORY FACTORS SUCH AS THE FAILURE OF MATERIALS AND SYSTEMS, HUMAN ERRORS, AND ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS; AND THE INVESTIGATIVE REPORT.
