Abstract
INTENDED FOR AN AUDIENCE WITH AN ACADEMIC, LEGAL, MORAL, OR MILITARY INTEREST IN THE CURRENT ARMED CONFLICT IN AFRICA, THIS BOOK PROVIDES A COMPREHENSIVE ACCOUNT OF TERRORIST ACTIVITIES AND ANTITERRORIST CAMPAIGNS CONDUCTED DURING THE LAST QUARTER CENTURY IN SOUTH-WEST AFRICA, RHODESIA, MOZAMBIQUE, ANGOLA, PORTUGUESE GUINEA, ZAMBIA, TANZANIA, MALAWI, BOTSWANA, AND SOUTH AFRICA. TO GAIN PRIMARY SOURCE MATERIAL THE AUTHOR CONDUCTED RESEARCH IN METROPOLITAN PORTUGAL AND AREAS OF SOUTHERN AND PORTUGUESE AFRICA WHERE HE MET AND INTERVIEWED NUMEROUS PARTIES TO THE CONFLICT, INCLUDING RANK-AND-FILE COMBATANTS, ADVISORS TO THE ANTI-PORTUGUESE FORCES, RADICAL REVOLUTIONARIES, WAR VICTIMS, AND MEMBERS OF THE VARIOUS SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS. THE BOOK PROVIDES CAREFUL EXAMINATIONS OF PROBLEMS OF TERMINOLOGY, THE PITFALLS OF ANTITERRORIST COUNTERMEASURES, MISUSE OF PROPAGANDA, AND MEDIA AND OFFICIAL RESPONSES TO THE BALANCING OF SECURITY REQUIREMENTS AND THE PUBLIC'S RIGHT TO KNOW. THE EFFECTS OF THE AFRICAN CONFLICT ON THE FABRIC OF PORTUGUESE FAMILY LIFE AND A DETAILED EXAMINATION OF THE EXO-AFRICAN SOURCES OF FISCAL AND MATERIAL SUPPORT ARE ALSO DOCUMENTED. AN INDEX AND BIBLIOGRAPHY, AND MAPS INDICATING THE VARIOUS TERRORIST FACTIONS' REGIONS OF OPERATION ARE PROVIDED. (KBL)
