AN OVERVIEW OF CRIMES, CRIMINALS, AND THE POLICE IS DIRECTED AT YOUNG ADULTS AND IS ILLUSTRATED WITH EXCERPTS OF NARRATIVES BY CRIMINALS AND POLICE OFFICERS.
Abstract
WHILE CRIME IN OTHER COUNTRIES IS MENTIONED, THE FOCUS IS ON GREAT BRITAIN. TYPICAL INCIDENTS OF CRIMES SUCH AS THEFT, ROBBERY, CONFIDENCE GAMES, PASSING BAD CHECKS, SMUGGLING, AND FORGERY ARE PRESENTED. FOLLOWING A BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO EACH TYPE OF CRIME, AN OFFENDER OR A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER DESCRIBES A PARTICULAR INCIDENT. THE WORK OF THE POLICE PATROL AND OF A DETECTIVE IS CONSIDERED. MOST OF THE NARRATIVES CONCERN A CONTEMPORARY OCCURRENCE, BUT SIMPLE THEFT IS DISCUSSED USING A 1920'S CRIME SPREE WHICH INVOLVED EARLY UTILIZATION OF AN AUTOMOBILE FOR QUICK ESCAPES. PHOTOGRAPHS AND DRAWINGS ILLUSTRATE THE TEXT. IN ALL SITUATIONS DESCRIBED IN THE EXCERPTS, THE OFFENDER IS EVENTUALLY APPREHENDED. THE FINAL CHAPTER DESCRIBES LIFE IN PRISON AND CONSIDERS THE MOTIVATION OF CRIMINALS. A GLOSSARY OF TERMS USED BY ROBBERS, A BIBLIOGRAPHY, AND AN INDEX ARE PROVIDED. (AJJ)
