THE USE OF GENERALIZED SIGNAL FLOW GRAPHS TO EXAMINE THE WORKINGS OF COMPLEX CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS IS DESCRIBED IN A PRESENTATION DIRECTED TO SYSTEM ANALYSTS.
Abstract
IN THE SIGNAL FLOW GRAPH, VARIABLES ARE IDENTIFIED WITH NODES (AS OPPOSED TO BLOCKS). THE LINEAR SIGNAL FLOW GRAPH DERIVES MUCH OF ITS POTENTIAL FOR CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM ANALYSIS FROM THE BASIC CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN THE GRAPH AND ALGEBRAIC RELATIONSHIPS. A CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS CONSIDERED 'LARGE' WHEN A COMPLETE ACCOUNTING OF ALL ITS CONNECTIONS AND ALL THE BEHAVIOR OF ITS ELEMENTS IS NOT PRACTICAL. THROUGH THE PROCESS OF MINIATURIZATION, IT IS POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE REPLICAS OF LARGE SYSTEMS; I.E., SIMPLIFIED SYSTEMS WITH THEIR OWN GENERALIZED SIGNAL FLOW GRAPHS IN WHICH LESS DETAIL IS VISIBLE. THE PROCESS OF MINIATURIZATION AND ITS APPLICATION TO LARGE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS ARE DESCRIBED. THE POTENTIAL OF THE MINIATURIZATION CONCEPT FOR PROVIDING FLEXIBILITY IN THE ANALYSIS OF LARGE SYSTEMS IS NOTED. FLOW GRAPHS, EQUATIONS, AND A LIST OF REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED. (LKM)
