THE PLACE OF FORENSIC STUDIES IN SECURITY DEGREE PROGRAMS IS ASSESSED, AND RECOMMENDATIONS ARE MADE FOR POSSIBLE COURSE CONCENTRATIONS.
Abstract
FORENSICS AND CRIMINALISTICS ARE USED INTERCHANGEABLY TO DESCRIBE THE DISCIPLINE WHICH IS DIRECTED TO THE RECOGNITION, IDENTIFICATION, INDIVIDUALIZATION, AND EVALUATION OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE, BY THE APPLICATION OF THE NATURAL SCIENCES IN LAW. SECURITY FORENSICS IS THE USE OF FORENSICS IN CORPORATE CRIME LABORATORIES. HOWEVER, THE SECURITY SPECIALIST IS SELDOM TRAINED IN THE USE OF THESE LABORATORIES AND SCIENTIFIC METHODS. MANY CRIMINAL JUSTICE DEGREE PROGRAMS INCLUDE COURSES IN FORENSICS. THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT SPECIAL COURSES BE DESIGNED TO MEET THE SPECIAL NEEDS OF SECURITY STUDENTS AND THEIR FUTURE EMPLOYERS. ONE EXPERT IN THE FIELD USES THE TERM 'SECURALISTICS' OR CRIMINALISTICS AND DEFINES IT AS SELECTED COURSES COVERING DOCUMENT EXAMINATION, GLASS EXAMINATIONS, CRIME SCENE EXAMINATIONS, POLYGRAPH TECHNIQUES, DETECTION EQUIPMENT, AND OTHER RELATED SUBJECTS. THESE METHODS CAN BE USED BY SECURITY PERSONNEL IN THE INVESTIGATION OF COMPUTER CRIMES. OTHER APPLICATIONS INCLUDE THE USE OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL STRESS EVALUATOR AND THE POLYGRAPH FOR PREEMPLOYMENT TESTING. ANOTHER USE OF FORENSICS IN PRIVATE SECURITY IS DOCUMENT EXAMINATION WHICH WOULD HELP IN THE PREVENTION AND DETECTION OF FRAUD. IT IS HOPED THAT SECURITY TRAINING PROGRAMS WILL SOMEDAY INCLUDE COURSES IN FORENSICS. (BAC)
