TABULAR DATA FROM A SURVEY OF LABORATORY ANALYSIS OF SAMPLES OF HUMAN BLOOD ARE PRESENTED.
Abstract
THE SURVEY WAS THE THIRD IN A SERIES AIMED AT TESTING THE ABILITY OF FORENSIC LABORATORIES TO ANALYZE VARIOUS KINDS OF PHYSICAL EVIDENCE. OF THE 232 LABORATORIES SENT SAMPLES (A SWATCH OF MATERIAL WITH A DRIED HUMAN BLOOD STAIN) AND QUESTIONNAIRES, 154 LABORATORIES RESPONDED WITH COMPLETED DATA SHEETS. THE LABORATORIES REPORTED THE METHODS THEY NORMALLY USE TO ASCERTAIN THAT A SAMPLE IS BLOOD AND TO DETERMINE THAT THE BLOOD IS FROM A HUMAN BEING, THE BLOOD TYPE OF THE SAMPLE AND THE METHODS USED TO DETERMINE THE TYPE, AND OTHER GROUPING DATA NORMALLY DEVELOPED IN A BLOOD ANALYSIS. OF THE 154 RESPONDING LABORATORIES, 148 CORRECTLY IDENTIFIED THE BLOOD TYPE OF THE SAMPLE. FIFTY-EIGHT RESPONDENTS REPORTED ADDITIONAL GROUPING DATA. LABORATORY FINDINGS AND METHODS OF ANALYSIS ARE REPORTED IN NINE TABLES, INCLUDING SUMMARY DATA ON METHODS OF ANALYSIS AND ITEM-BY-ITEM BREAKDOWNS OF RESPONSES BY INDIVIDUAL LABORATORIES. A DESCRIPTION OF SURVEY METHODS AND A COPY OF THE QUESTIONNAIRE ARE INCLUDED. OTHER PROFICIENCY SURVEYS ARE DOCUMENTED IN NCJ 47522-47523, AND 47525-47542. (LKM)
