AS PART OF A COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF THE PROCESS USED BY WITNESSES TO RECONSTRUCT A SUSPECT'S IMAGE, TAPE RECORDINGS WERE MADE OF CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN WITNESSES AND POLICE ARTISTS OR IDENTI-KIT TECHNICIANS.
Abstract
THE PROJECT WAS PART OF AN ATTEMPT TO DEVELOP A COMPUTERIZED SUSPECT FACIAL IDENTIFICATION SYSTEM. BASICALLY, THE SYSTEM WAS DESIGNED TO ALLOW A COMPUTER-SEARCH FOR MUG FILE PHOTOGRAPHS MATCHING DESCRIPTIONS PROVIDED BY WITNESSES. THIS IS A VERBATIM TRANSCRIPT OF CONVERSATIONS BETWEEN WITNESSES AND THE POLICE ARTISTS OR IDENTI-KIT TECHNICIANS TRYING TO RECONSTRUCT THE FACIAL FEATURES OF SUSPECTS. IT INCLUDES 125 DESCRIPTIONS FOR WHITE MALES, 40 FOR BLACK MALES, AND 40 FOR WHITE FEMALES. FOR RELATED DOCUMENTS, SEE NCJ-47585-47587 AND 47589-47592. (GLR)
