A GROUP OF 135 MALE AND 51 FEMALE ADOLESCENT DELINQUENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES IS EXAMINED IN A STUDY OF RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PSYCHIATRIC GROUPINGS AND AGE, INTELLIGENCE, FAMILY INTERACTION, AND OTHER VARIABLES.
Abstract
THE ANALYSIS, WHICH EMPLOYS DATA FROM AN EARLIER STUDY, DIVIDES THE ADOLESCENT SUBJECTS INTO THE FOLLOWING PSYCHIATRIC GROUPINGS: BEHAVIOR DISORDER; ADJUSTMENT REACTION; PERSONALITY DISORDER; SOCIALIZED DELINQUENCY SYNDROME; AND NO DISORDER. THE VARIABLES CONSIDERED INCLUDE AGE, INTELLIGENCE AND FAMILY INTERACTION. THERE ARE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN THE SIZES OF THE PSYCHIATRIC GROUPINGS, THE LARGEST NUMBER OF OFFENDERS (45.7 PERCENT OF THE TOTAL SAMPLE) BEING INCLUDED IN THE BEHAVIOR DISORDER CATEGORY. THERE WERE NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES AMONG PSYCHIATRIC GROUPINGS WITH REGARD TO AGE, INTELLIGENCE AND ACHIEVEMENT, ASSOCIATIONS DELINQUENCY (WHETHER AN OFFENSE WAS COMMITTED ALONE OR WITH OTHERS), RECIDIVISM, OR FAMILY DELINQENCY TRENDS. THERE WERE SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES AMONG PSYCHIATRIC CATEGORIES, AND BETWEEN SEXES WITHIN PSYCHIATRIC CATEGORIES, WITH REGARD TO FAMILY INTERACTIONS. FINDINGS FOR THE PSYCHIATRIC GROUPINGS ARE COMPARED WITH FINDINGS FOR CHARGE GROUPINGS OF THE SAME SUBJECTS. IMPLICATIONS FOR DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT ARE NOTED. A LIST OF REFERENCES IS INCLUDED. TABULAR DATA ARE NOT PROVIDED. --ABSTRACT IN FRENCH. (LKM)
