Abstract
THE REPORT OF THE CHIEF JUDGE OF THE COURT OF APPEALS DESCRIBES COURT PLANNING AND OPERATIONS AND ANALYZES STATISTICS ON CASELOADS, BACKLOGS, AND DELAYS. THE COURT'S CONTINUING INABILITY TO KEEP PACE WITH A MOUNTING CASE BACKLOG IS NOTED. ALTERNATIVE STRATEGIES FOR ADDRESSING THE BACKLOG PROBLEM ARE CONSIDERED. THE REPORT OF THE CHIEF JUDGE OF THE SUPERIOR COURT PRESENTS STATISTICAL ANALYSES OF COURT DISPOSITIONS FOR FELONY, FEDERAL MISDEMEANOR, MAJOR TRAFFIC, CIVIL JURY, CIVIL NONJURY, JUVENILE, DIVORCE, AND OTHER CASES. PROGRAMS UNDERTAKEN DURING THE YEAR ARE DESCRIBED, INCLUDING MEASURES TO REDUCE CIVIL CASE BACKLOGS AND BACKLOGS OF JURY-DEMANDABLE TRAFFIC CASES, DIVERSION OF TRAFFIC CASES TO AN ADMINISTRATIVE TRIBUNAL, APPOINTMENT OF COUNSEL FOR INDIGENT DEFENDANTS IN TRAFFIC CASES, CHANGES IN JURY PROCEDURES, AND OTHER PROGRAMS AND STUDIES. THE BULK OF THE REPORT CONSISTS OF DETAILED STATISTICS FOR THE COURT OF APPEALS, THE SUPERIOR COURT (CRIMINAL, CIVIL, FAMILY, SOCIAL SERVICES, TAX, CENTRAL VIOLATIONS, PROBATE, AUDITOR, AND MARRIAGE DIVISIONS), AND THE FINANCIAL OPERATIONS AND COURT REPORTER DIVISIONS OF THE DISTRICT'S COURT SYSTEM.
