AN OVERVIEW OF BUSINESS SECURITY MANAGEMENT IS PRESENTED WITH PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATIONS, PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT, OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT, AND PUBLIC RELATIONS.
Abstract
IN PART 1, GENERAL SECURITY MANAGEMENT IS EXPLORED. GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF ORGANIZATIONS ARE EXAMINED WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF AUTHORITY, RESPONSIBILITY, AND ACCOUNTABILITY; AND THE ROLE OF SECURITY WITHIN THE ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE IS EXAMINED. FORMAL AND INFORMAL ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE, AND THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEM ARE EXAMINED AS THEY APPLY TO THE SECURITY DEPARTMENT. THE DIVERSE ROLES OF SECURITY IN THE ORGANIZATION ARE DISCUSSED: THESE MAY INCLUDE PROTECTIVE SERVICES, HOME AND BUSINESS SECURITY SURVEYS, EMERGENCY SERVICES, EDUCATIONAL SERVICES, SELF-PROTECTION PROGRAMS, AND INVESTIGATIVE FUNCTIONS. THE GOALS AND ROLES OF THE SECURITY DIRECTOR AND THE SECURITY SUPERVISOR ARE DESCRIBED. STANDARDS OF CONDUCT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL SECURITY EMPLOYEE ARE ALSO OUTLINED. PART II DEALS WITH THE MANY ASPECTS OF SECURITY PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT INCLUDING PERSONNEL SELECTION AND TRAINING, DISCIPLINE, MOTIVATION AND MORALE, PROMOTION, COMMUNICATION, AND CAREER DEVELOPMENT. PHASES OF OPERATIONAL MANAGEMENT COVERED IN PART III ARE PLANNING AND BUDGETING, PROGRAM MANAGEMENT, INVESTIGATIONS, AND OFFICE ADMINISTRATION. IN THE AREA OF PROGRAM MANAGEMENT, THE INSPECTION PROCESSES, FORMAL OR INFORMAL AND STRUCTURED OR UNSTRUCTURED, ARE EXAMINED; AND RISK ASSESSMENT AND COUNTERMEASURES INCLUDING PROCEDURAL CONTROLS AND HARDWARE ARE REVIEWED. AMONG INVESTIGATIONS A SECURITY DEPARTMENT MAY BE CALLED UPON TO MAKE ARE: APPLICANT BACKGROUND INVESTIGATIONS, INTERNAL AND EXTERNAL CRIMINAL ATTACK, CORPORATE INTEGRITY AND LIABILITY INVESTIGATIONS, AND LABOR MATTERS. INVESTIGATIVE CONFIDENTIALITY IS ALSO EXAMINED. CONSIDERABLE EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON PUBLIC RELATIONS FUNCTIONS. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR SELLING SECURITY WITHIN THE ORGANIZATION INCLUDE PERSONAL PRESENTATIONS, MEETINGS, AUDIOVISUAL PRESENTATIONS, AND INVOLVEMENT PROGRAMS. RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS OF LAW ENFORCEMENT ARE DISCUSSED AND SERVICES PROVIDED BY EACH SECTOR ARE PRESENTED. RELATIONS WITHIN INDUSTRY ARE EXPLORED; AND COMMUNITY RELATIONS AND METHODS FOR IMPROVING THEM THROUGH PUBLIC CONTACT AND COMMUNITY-ORIENTED PROJECTS ARE GIVEN. APPENDIXES INCLUDE AN EMPLOYEE PERFORMANCE EVALUATION FORM, A SECURITY VULNERABILITY SURVEY PROCEDURE, AND A SECURITY DEPARTMENT LOSS PREVENTION CHECKLIST. AN INDEX IS ALSO PROVIDED.
