STATISTICS DERIVED FROM THE ALCOHOL PROBATION DEPARTMENT OF THE LAFAYETTE CITY, INDIANA, COURT FOR MARCH 1973 TO FEBRUARY 1975 WERE EXAMINED IN AN EVALUATION OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF AN ALCOHOL REHABILITATION PROGRAM.
Abstract
A TOTAL OF 802 INDIVIDUALS WERE BROUGHT BEFORE THE COURT ON ALCOHOL AND/OR DRUG RELATED CHARGES DURING THE STUDY PERIOD. OF THESE OFFENDERS, 90 PERCENT WERE MALE, AND 70 PERCENT WERE EMPLOYED. OFFENDERS IN THE 18 TO 30 YEAR OLD AGE RANGE WERE OVER-REPRESENTED, AS WERE DIVORCED/SEPARATED OFFENDERS. THE MOST COMMON OFFENSE WAS PUBLIC INTOXICATION, FOLLOWED IN FREQUENCY BY DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE. OF THE TOTAL OFFENDER POPULATION, 107 OR 13 PERCENT WERE REPEATERS. PUBLIC INTOXICATION WAS THE MOST FREQUENTLY REPEATED OFFENSE. IN GENERAL, THE MOST SERIOUS OFFENSES HAD AN EXTREMELY LOW RATE OF REPETITION: DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE HAD ONLY A 4 PERCENT REPEATER RATE, AND RECKLESS DRIVING HAD ONLY A 3 PERCENT REPEATER RATE. IT IS POSITED THAT THIS LOW REPETITION RATE IS A RESULT, AT LEAST IN PART, OF THE COURT'S ALCOHOL INFORMATION SCHOOL. COMPOUNDING CHARGES--CHARGES FILED SUBSEQUENT TO AN ALCOHOL OR DRUG-RELATED OFFENSE--WERE ONLY SIGNIFICANT IN PUBLIC INTOXICATION CHARGES. SUCH COMPOUNDING CHARGES WERE NUMEROUS AND INCLUDED MANY CHARGES CONNECTED WITH ACTS OF VIOLENCE. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE ALCOHOL PROBATION PROGRAM HAS DONE A VERY CREDIBLE JOB IN LIMITING REPEAT OFFENSES BEFORE THE COURT. STATISTICAL DATA ARE PRESENTED FOR THE FOLLOWING OFFENSES: PUBLIC INTOXICATION, DRIVING UNDER THE INFLUENCE, MINOR IN POSSESSION, CONTRIBUTING TO THE DELINQUENCY OF A MINOR, HOUSE COMMON NUISANCE, DISORDERLY CONDUCT, THIRD DEGREE BURGLARY, AND ILLEGAL CONSUMPTION. STATISTICAL TABLES PROVIDE BREAKDOWNS BY SEX, AGE, MARITAL STATUS, AND EMPLOYMENT STATUS FOR EACH OF THESE OFFENSE CATEGORIES. (JAP)
