Abstract
THE 55 DOCUMENTS IN THIS BIBLIOGRAPHY HAVE BEEN SELECTED FROM THE NCJRS DATA BASE; THEY WERE PUBLISHED BETWEEN 1969 AND 1977. ENTRIES ARE ORGANIZED BY SUBJECT AREA. IN THE FIRST SECTION THE DOCUMENTS COMPARE PUBLIC DEFENDERS WITH PRIVATELY RETAINED COUNSEL. SOME OF THESE COMPARISONS REPORT OPINION SURVEYS OF THE DEFENDANTS SERVED BY A PARTICULAR PUBLIC SYSTEM; OTHERS ARE STUDIES OF CASE DISPOSITIONS. THE SECOND SECTION CONTAINS FORMAL EVALUATIONS OF SPECIFIC PUBLIC DEFENDER SERVICES, AND MANY OF THESE DOCUMENTS ALSO INCLUDE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVING THESE SERVICES. THE FINAL SECTION PROVIDES DESCRIPTIONS AND SUGGESTIONS OF AREAS FOR FURTHER GROWTH, INCLUDING INTERNSHIPS WITH PUBLIC DEFENDERS FOR LAW STUDENTS AND THE PROVISION OF PUBLIC DEFENDER SERVICES IN APPELLATE COURTS. WITHIN EACH SECTION, THE CITATIONS ARE ARRANGED ALPHABETICALLY BY AUTHOR. INFORMATION IS PROVIDED ON HOW TO OBTAIN THE DOCUMENTS CITED. A LIST OF PUBLISHERS AND DISTRIBUTORS OF THE MATERIAL, AS WELL AS A LIST OF ORGANIZATIONS WHICH MAY BE ABLE TO SUPPLY ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON PUBLIC DEFENDER SYSTEMS, ARE APPENDED.
