THE ADULT CAREER EDUCATION IN CORRECTIONS PROGRAM IS DESCRIBED. THE PROGRAM HAS TWO PURPOSES: TO TRAIN PERSONNEL AND TO IMPLEMENT A MODEL DESIGN.
Abstract
STAFF DEVELOPMENT WAS PROVIDED THROUGH AN INTEGRATED PROGRAM OF BASIC AND ADVANCED TRAINING FOR SELECTED PARTICIPANTS EMPLOYED AT CORRECTIONS AND CORRECTIONS-RELATED AGENCIES. A SERIES OF FOUR SEMINARS WAS CONDUCTED TO EQUIP PARTICIPANTS WITH BASIC SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE FOR PLANNING, IMPLEMENTING, AND EVALUATING DELIVERY SYSTEMS OF ADULT CAREER EDUCATION IN CORRECTIONAL SETTINGS. ADVANCED TRAINING WAS ALSO PROVIDED IN ORDER TO IMPART SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ATTITUDES FOR EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP. THE GENERALIZED PLANNING MODEL PRODUCED IN 1972-73 WAS EVALUATED AND REVISED, AND 23 SIMULATIONS WERE USED TO TEST THE MODEL. REVISIONS AND REFINEMENTS WERE MADE ACCORDING TO THE RESULTS. THE PLANNING MODEL WAS USED IN SIMULATIONS OF REAL-LIFE CORRECTIONAL ENVIRONMENTS FOR THE PURPOSE OF DESIGNING DELIVERY SYSTEM MODELS FOR DESIGNATED CORRECTIONS SETTINGS. DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES INCLUDED PREPARATION OF MATERIALS, DISTRIBUTION TO REGIONAL CENTERS, AND PRESENTATIONS TO NATIONAL AND REGIONAL PROFESSIONAL GROUPS. AS A RESULT OF THE PROGRAM, 64 INDIVIDUALS RECEIVED BASIC TRAINING, 17 RECEIVED ADVANCED TRAINING, A GENERALIZED PLANNING MODEL WAS DEVELOPED, AND 21 DELIVERY SYSTEM MODELS FOR CORRECTIONAL AGENCIES IN 16 STATES AND CANADA WERE DESIGNED. ILLUSTRATIONS OF THE MODEL DESIGNS ARE PROVIDED IN THE TEXT AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--DAG).
