THE PHILOSOPHY AND IMPLEMENTATION OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATION IN A CORRECTIONAL SETTING IS DISCUSSED IN REFERENCE TO THE PROGRAM AT THE MICHIGAN REFORMATORY FOR DELINQUENT BOYS.
Abstract
IT IS NOTED THAT ONE OF THE FREQUENTLY DIAGNOSED PROBLEMS OF THE OFFENDER IS A LACK OF SELF-CONFIDENCE AND SENSE OF IDENTITY IN A ROLE OF POSITIVE ACHIEVEMENT INDIVIDUALLY AND WITHIN A GROUP. PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATION PROGRAMS IN CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS ARE VIEWED AS MEANS OF HELPING INMATES BREAK THROUGH THIS BLOCK TO SOCIAL ADJUSTMENT. BY OFFERING A VARIETY OF OPPORTUNITIES FOR INMATES TO DEVELOP AND EXPRESS THEIR PHYSICAL SKILLS, TALENTS, AND INTELLECTUAL INTERESTS IN A POSITIVE WAY, INSTITUTIONS CAN AID THEM IN ACTING OUT FEELINGS AND SKILLS THAT BECOME THE BASIS FOR NEW SELF-CONCEPTS. AN EFFECTIVE PHYSICAL EDUCATION AND RECREATIONAL PROGRAM IS INDICATED TO HAVE THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS: (1) THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF SERVING AS A MEDIUM FOR REHABILITATION; (2) A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES TO PROVIDE FOR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS; (3) POLICY AND OBJECTIVES UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF ONE PERSON; (4) ALL EMPLOYEES TRAINED IN THE FIELD OF ACTIVITY FOR WHICH THEY ARE EMPLOYED; (5) CLOSELY ALLIED TO THE CLINICAL STAFF FOR INDIVIDUAL TREATMENT; (6) ALL FACILITIES USED TO THE MAXIMUM THROUGHOUT THE DAY; AND (7) STAFF MEETINGS AND BULLETINS USED TO AID THE CUSTODIAL STAFF AND OTHERS IN UNDERSTANDING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PROGRAM. BESIDES PHYSICAL EDUCATION STAFFED BY PROFESSIONALS, A LIBRARY WITH A TRAINED FULL-TIME LIBRARIAN, MUSICAL ORGANIZATIONS, AND MOVIES ARE RECOMMENDED. (RCB)
