DEMOGRAPHIC, INSTITUTIONAL, AND PSYCHODIAGNOSTIC VARIABLES ARE COMPARED FOR HOMOSEXUAL AND OTHER INMATES IN NORTH CAROLINA PRISONS.
Abstract
THE HOMOSEXUAL SAMPLE INCLUDED 40 MALE INMATES IDENTIFIED AS PRACTICING HOMOSEXUALS PRIOR TO THEIR CONFINEMENT. A RANDOM SAMPLE DRAWN FROM THE GENERAL PRISON POPULATION SERVED AS CONTROLS. SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WERE FOUND BETWEEN HOMOSEXUALS AND COMPARISON GROUPS ON SEVERAL VARIABLES. MOST NOTABLY, HOMOSEXUALS EXHIBITED GREATER DIFFICULTIES IN HANDLING STRESS, FRUSTRATION, AND IMPULSE CONTROL, WERE MORE ALIENTATED FROM BOTH STAFF AND OTHER INMATES, AND WERE MORE LIKELY TO ACT OUT THEIR FRUSTRATIONS THROUGH RULE INFRACTIONS AND ESCAPE ATTEMPTS. THE FINDING THAT ILLICIT SEXUAL ACTIVITY IS MORE COMMON AMONG THE HOMOSEXUAL SAMPLE THAN AMONG THE GENERAL INMATE POPULATION SUGGESTS THAT HOMOSEXUALS ATTEMPT TO CONTINUE THEIR HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVITY DURING CONFINEMENT. THE FINDING THAT NONE OF THE PROVEN INCIDENCES OF HOMOSEXUAL INVOLVEMENT BY MEMBERS OF THE HOMOSEXUAL SAMPLE WERE ASSAULTIVE SUGGESTS THAT HOMOSEXUAL INMATES DO NOT BECOME ASSAULTIVE IN THEIR ATTEMPTS TO GAIN HOMOSEXUAL CONTACT WITH OTHER MALE INMATES. SUPPORTING DATA AND A LIST OF REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED--LKM)
