TECHNIQUES FOR GUARDING HOMES AGAINST BURGLARY ARE DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED IN A BOOKLET PREPARED FOR THE CITIZENS OF CALIFORNIA AS PART OF THAT STATE'S ANTIBURGLARY PROGRAM.
Abstract
THE BOOKLET ILLUSTRATES A NUMBER OF LOCKS AND OTHER DEVICES FOR SECURING WINDOWS, DOORS, AND GARAGE DOORS. A SECONDARY DEFENSE RECOMMENDED FOR VALUABLE GOODS SUCH AS SILVERWARE, JEWELRY, AND GUNS IS A HINGING CLOSET DOOR EQUIPPED WITH A DEADBOLT LOCK. SPACE DETECTION ALARM SYSTEMS ARE CONSIDERED EXCELLENT. ANY ALARM SYSTEM SHOULD INCLUDE A BATTERY FAILSAFE BACKUP, FIRE SENSING CAPABILITY, READ-OUT ABILITY TO CHECK THE WORKING OF THE SYSTEM, AND A HORN SOUNDING DEVICE INSTALLED THROUGH A VENT IN THE ATTIC. POINTS TO COVER WHEN MAKING A SECURITY CHECK OF THE HOME ARE NOTED. PROCEDURES THAT CAN HELP REDUCE THE LIKELIHOOD OF BEING BURGLARIZED ARE SUGGESTED, SUCH AS CALLING THE POLICE WHEN A STRANGER IS SEEN LURKING ABOUT THE NEIGHBORHOOD, BURNING A LIGHT AT NIGHT WHEN ONE IS AWAY (VIA A TIMER OR PHOTOELECTRIC CELL), HAVING MAIL AND NEWSPAPERS COLLECTED WHEN AWAY FROM HOME, AND NOT HIDING A DOOR KEY OUTSIDE. A FORM FOR LISTING CREDIT CARDS AND PERSONAL PROPERTY IS PROVIDED, AS ARE SECURITY CHECKLISTS TO FOLLOW BEFORE LEAVING THE HOME ON BRIEF OUTINGS OR ON EXTENDED VACATIONS. THREE POINTS ARE EMPHASIZED: LOCK THE DWELLING, TRUST A NEIGHBOR WITH A KEY, AND BE A CONCERNED NEIGHBOR. FOR SPANISH TRANSLATION SEE NCJ-49546. (LKM)
