THE OBJECTIVES OF AND RELATIONSHIPS AMONG NATIONAL STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS IN THE FIELD OF JUVENILE JUSTICE ARE SUMMARIZED.
Abstract
A NUMBER OF PROFESSIONAL ORGANIZATIONS, NATIONAL AND STATE COMMISSIONS, AND OTHER GROUPS AND AGENCIES HAVE EXAMINED LAWS AND PRACTICES AND HAVE PREPARED STANDARDS, MODELS, OR GUIDELINES THAT SEEK TO IMPROVE THE FAIRNESS AND EFFECTIVENESS OF THE JUVENILE AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEMS. THREE MAJOR GROUPS WITH DIVERSIFIED MEMBERSHIPS HAVE DEVELOPED OR ARE DEVELOPING STANDARDS RELATED TO JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION: THE INSTITUTE OF JUDICIAL ADMINISTRATION/AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION JOINT COMMISSION ON JUVENILE JUSTICE STANDARDS; THE TASK FORCE TO DEVELOP STANDARDS AND GOALS FOR JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION; AND THE ADVISORY COMMITTEE TO THE LEAA ADMINISTRATOR ON STANDARDS FOR THE ADMINISTRATION OF JUVENILE JUSTICE. THE MATERIALS PREPARED BY THESE AND OTHER GROUPS CAN ASSIST THOSE WORKING TO IMPROVE THE JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE JUVENILE JUSTICE AND DELINQUENCY PREVENTION ACT PROVIDES A MEANS FOR ASSEMBLING AND ASSAYING THESE MATERIALS, AS WELL AS A SOURCE OF FUNDS TO TRANSFORM WORDS INTO ACTION. THE MATERIALS REFLECT THE COMMONALITY OF PRINCIPLE AND THE DIVERSITY THAT CHARACTERIZE STANDARDS DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS IN JUVENILE JUSTICE. NOTES ARE PROVIDED. (LKM)
