Abstract
THE DATA FOR THIS STUDY WERE DERIVED FROM A SAMPLE OF APPROXIMATELY 200 PROTOCOLS OF MALE AND FEMALE ADJUDICATED DELINQUENTS DIAGNOSED BY THE WRITER OVER AN 18 MONTH PERIOD. DATA UPON WHICH FINAL CONCLUSIONS WERE RENDERED CAME FROM 156 OF THE SUBJECTS. THE SUBJECTS WERE REFERRED FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL TESTING BY THE PROBATION DEPARTMENT OF THE SUMMIT COUNTY JUVENILE COURT, AKRON, OHIO. ALTHOUGH IT IS ACKNOWLEDGED THAT THIS IS A BIASED SAMPLE, IT IS HOPED THAT THE RESULTS OF THE STUDY MIGHT BE OF BENEFIT TO OTHER COURTS AND PROFESSIONALS IN SIMILAR SETTINGS. AGE, SEX, RACE, WECHSLER FULL SCALE INTELLIGENCE QUOTIENTS (IQS), VERBAL IQS, PERFORMANCE IQS, DIAGNOSIS, NUMBER OF OFFENSES PRIOR TO REFERRAL FOR TESTING, AND RECOMMENDATIONS WERE TABULATED FOR EACH SUBJECT. VERBAL INTERVIEWS WITH PROBATION OFFICERS WHO WERE ASSIGNED TO SUPERVISE SUBJECTS WERE OBTAINED AND RESULTS REVEALED THAT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR PROBATION COUNSELING WERE FOLLOWED AND THAT AT LEAST ONE OTHER RECOMMENDATION BEYOND PROBATION COUNSELING WAS ATTEMPTED. FEW REFERRALS TO SOCIAL SERVICE AGENCIES WERE BEING USED. IT IS SUPPOSED THAT THE FAILURE OF DELINQUENTS' PARENTS TO PURSUE THESE REFERRALS WITH THEIR DELINQUENT CHILDREN WAS LARGELY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS FAILURE. IT IS CONSIDERED THAT THE TOTAL RESULTS INDICATE A POSITIVE APPROACH BY THE PROBATION DEPARTMENT WITH THE LIMITED RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO THEM. DATA FROM THE STUDY AND REFERENCES ARE INCLUDED. (RCB)
