THE JUDICIAL PROCESSING OF THE NINE ADULTS ARRESTED FOR ROBBERY IN CASSIA COUNTY, IDAHO, DURING 1975 IS ANALYZED IN A REPORT FORM THE IDAHO LAW ENFORCEMENT PLANNING COMMISSION'S STATISTICAL ANALYSIS CENTER.
Abstract
TWO SCHEMATIC DIAGRAMS ILLUSTRATE THE FLOW OF ROBBERY ARRESTEES THROUGH THE COUNTY'S LEGAL SYSTEM. ONE DIAGRAM NOTES PERCENTAGES OF ARRESTEES WHOSE CASES WERE DISMISSED AT EACH STAGE OF THE SYSTEM. THE SECOND DIAGRAM NOTES PERCENTAGES FOR EACH DECISION POINT (E.G., THE PERCENTAGE OF THOSE PROSECUTED WHO WERE CONVICTED). THE ANALYSIS SHOWS THAT THE PROSECUTOR PRESSED CHARGES AGAINST ONLY THREE OF THE NINE ARRESTEES. IN TWO CASES, CONVICTION WAS OBTAINED THROUGH A PLEA OF GUILTY TO THE ORIGINAL CHARGE. ONLY 22.2 PERCENT OF THE ADULTS ARRESTED FOR ROBBERY WERE CONVICTED, BUT 66.7 PERCENT OF THOSE PROSECUTED WERE CONVICTED. ALL CASES HANDLED BY THE MAGISTRATE COURT WERE DISMISSED. THE TWO CASES HANDLED BY THE DISTRICT COURT RESULTED IN CONVICTIONS AND SENTENCES. THERE WERE NO TRIALS. THE ANALYSIS ALSO SHOWS THE PRETRIAL RELEASE STATUS OF THE ARRESTEES. (LKM)
