Abstract
THE ROLE OF MANITOBA'S MINISTRY OF CORRECTIVE AND REHABILITATIVE SERVICES IS SUMMARIZED, AND THE DIRECT AND SUPPORT SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE MINISTRY ARE DESCRIBED. DIRECT SERVICES INCLUDE SUPERVISION AND CUSTODY OF ADULT AND JUVENILE OFFENDERS, VARIOUS REHABILITATIVE AND TREATMENT SERVICES, ADULT PROBATION AND PAROLE (PRESENTENCE REPORTS, PROBATION SUPERVISION, PAROLE SERVICES AND SUPERVISION), AND JUVENILE PROBATION (INTAKE SCREENING, COURT SERVICES, PROBATION SUPERVISION, POSTDISCHARGE SUPERVISION). SUPPORT SERVICES INCLUDE THE ACTIVITIES OF THE OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR GENERAL (MONITORING OF CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS AND PROGRAMS, INVESTIGATION OF COMPLAINTS AND DISTURBANCES, PARTICIPATION IN JOINT FEDERAL/PROVINCIAL ACTIVITIES), STAFF TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT, AND PROGRAM REVIEW AND DEVELOPMENT. OTHER MINISTRY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE COMMUNITY AGENCIES (RESIDENTIAL CARE, HALFWAY HOUSES, COUNSELING, COURT-RELATED SERVICES) AND ALCOHOLISM AND DRUG ABUSE PROGRAMMING. STATISTICS ON BOTH ADULT AND JUVENILE CORRECTIONAL CLIENTS ARE PROVIDED. THE REPORT ALSO COVERS THE ACTIVITIES OF THE PROVINCE'S DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT (RESOURCES, SOCIAL SECURITY, COMMUNITY SERVICES, AND MENTAL HEALTH AND REHABILITATION). (LKM)
