SWEDEN CANNOT CONSIDER ITSELF IMMUNE FROM TERRORIST ACTIVITY, IN FACT, IT SEEMS TO ATTRACT TERRORIST REFUGEES. THE ACTIVITIES OF SWEDISH POLICE AND SWEDISH LEGISLATORS TAKEN TO CONTROL TERRORISM ARE DISCUSSED.
Abstract
THE OPENNESS AND TOLERANCE OF SWEDEN'S SOCIETY, AND THE EXISTENCE OF MANY POLITICAL REFUGEES IN SWEDEN, MAKE SWEDEN AN ATTRACTIVE SPOT FOR TERRORISTS. INTERNATIONAL POLICE COOPERATION DIRECTED AT PREVENTING AND CONTROLLING TERRORIST ACTIVITY HAS INCREASED AND POLICE USE BOMB DETECTION DEVICES SUCH AS X-RAY EQUIPMENT, REMOTE CONTROL EQUIPMENT, AND TV CAMERAS, FOR DETECTING BOMBS INSIDE PACKAGES OR LUGGAGE AT AIRPORTS AND NATIONAL BORDERLINES. A NEW SWEDISH TERRORIST LAW HAS BEEN PASSED PROVIDING IMMIGRATION POLICE WITH RESOURCES NECESSARY TO CONDUCT SECURE CONTROLS OF PERSONS COMING INTO SWEDEN. THE LAW SPECIFIES THAT PERSONS BELONGING TO CERTAIN GROUPS (E.G. THE JAPANESE RED ARMY OR BLACK SEPTEMBER) WILL NOT BE ALLOWED INTO THE COUNTRY. SEVERAL SAFETY MEASURES ARE OUTLINED THAT WOULD MAKE TERRORIST ATTACK ON BUSINESS EXECUTIVES OR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS MORE DIFFICULT. SUCH PERSONS ARE URGED TO VARY THEIR DAILY ACTIVITY HABITS, KEEP IN FREQUENT CONTACT WITH THEIR FAMILIES THROUGHOUT THE DAY, AND BE CAREFUL ABOUT GIVING OUT INFORMATION ON FAMILY MEMBERS' LOCATIONS DURING THE DAY. --IN SWEDISH.
