COMPUTER-GENERATED MAPS SHOW THE GEOGRAPHIC DISTRIBUTION OF CRIMES AND REQUESTS FOR POLICE SERVICE IN BIRMINGHAM, ALA., DURING 1975.
Abstract
THE MAPS ARE PART OF A SERIES DESIGNED TO PROVIDE GOVERNMENT, BUSINESSES, AND PRIVATE CITIZENS WITH PLANNING INFORMATION. A COMPUTER TECHNIQUE HAS BEEN USED TO COLLAPSE AND MANIPULATE NUMERICAL DATA FROM POLICE DISPATCH RECORDS INTO MAPS SHOWING PATTERNS OF REPORTED CRIMES AND REQUESTS FOR SERVICES BY SPECIFIC NEIGHBORHOOD (POLICE BEAT). TWO MAPS REFLECT SUMMARY DISPATCH DATA FOR THE YEAR. OTHER MAPS SHOW THE ANNUAL AND QUARTERLY DISTRIBUTIONS OF 25 TYPES OF CRIME AND REQUESTS FOR POLICE SERVICE. EACH SET OF MAPS IS ACCOMPANIED BY A DEFINITION OF THE TYPE OF CRIME OR SERVICE REQUEST, AND BY DATA SHOWING MEDIAN, LOW, HIGH, AND TOTAL OCCURRENCES FOR EACH QUARTER AND FOR THE YEAR. SEPARATE MAPS SHOW THE DISTRIBUTION OF HOMICIDE, RAPE, ROBBERY, LARCENY, BURGLARY, AGGRAVATED ASSAULT, AND MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT CASES THAT WERE CONFIRMED BY FIELD INVESTIGATION. A TABULAR DISPLAY OF CUMULATIVE DATA FOR THE YEAR IS APPENDED. A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF THE COMPUTER-MAPPING TECHNIQUE IS PROVIDED. SEE ALSO NCJ 50386 AND 36904. (LKM)
