IT IS ARGUED THAT CURRENT POLICE TRAINING DOES LITTLE TO PREPARE AN OFFICER TO DEAL WITH A COMPUTERIZED SOCIETY. DATA PROCESSING EDUCATION IS NEEDED TO DEAL WITH WHITE COLLAR CRIMINALS, AS WELL AS POLICE DATA SYSTEMS.
Abstract
IT IS SUGGESTED THAT LAW ENFORCEMENT MANAGEMENT IS SO BUSY KEEPING UP WITH DAILY PRESSURES THAT LITTLE ATTENTION IS PAID TO THE TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES TAKING PLACE IN SOCIETY. THESE CHANGES HAVE BROUGHT COMPUTERS INTO EVERYDAY USE IN MANY AREAS OF LIFE AND ARE MAKING COMPUTERIZATION A FACT OF CRIME AS WELL AS A FACT OF CRIME FIGHTING WHICH EVERY POLICE DEPARTMENT MUST FACE. DATA PROCESSING EDUCATION IS URGED FOR LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TO HELP THEM UNDERSTAND COMPUTER CRIME, TO HELP THEM DEAL WITH THE WORD PROCESSING REVOLUTION WHICH IS REPLACING THE FILING CABINET WITH THE COMPUTER, AND TO HELP THEM MAKE BEST POSSIBLE USE OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE INFORMATION SYSTEMS. ALL OF THIS CHANGE REQUIRES LONG RANGE PLANNING, LEGISLATIVE FLEXIBILITY, AND A NEW TYPE OF EDUCATION AND LONG-RANGE FINANCING FOR POLICE OPERATIONS. THERE IS ALREADY A SHORTAGE OF CERTIFIED CRIMINAL INFORMATION SYSTEMS ANALYSTS IN THE UNITED STATES. THE NEED FOR THIS TYPE OF PERSON IS GROWING AND POLICE EDUCATION SHOULD FILL IT. (GLR)
