OPERATIONS OF THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF CRIMINOLOGY DURING 1977 ARE CHARACTERIZED IN THIS ANNUAL REPORT, WITH AN EMPHAIS ON CONSOLIDATION RATHER THAN DEVELOPMENT.
Abstract
THE INSTITUTE CONCENTRATED ITS INTERESTS AND RESOURCES ON SUBJECTS SUCH AS ARMED ROBBERY AND WHITE COLLAR CRIME, HUMAN RIGHTS, CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION, AND TECHNIQUES OF CRIMINOLOGICAL RESEARCH. IN MORE SPECIALIZED FIELDS, IT CONDUCTED SEMINARS FOR PRISON PSYCHOLOGISTS AND CRIMINOLOGY LIBRARIANS. THE INSTITUTE PLAYED AN INTERNATIONAL ROLE, HELD SPECIAL MEETINGS AND CONFERENCES, AND CONDUCTED RESEARCH IN CRIMINOLOGY. MAJOR RESEARCH PROJECTS DEALT WITH PRINCIPLES OF SENTENCING, PATTERNS OF AND TRENDS IN CRIME, POLICE UNIONS, JUVENILE JUSTICE, WHITE COLLAR CRIME, AND CRIME AND JUSTICE IN GENERAL IN AUSTRALIA. MINOR RESEARCH PROJECTS INVOLVED COMMITTAL PROCEEDINGS, POLICE STRESS, THE PREPARATION OF A JOURNAL OF DRUG ISSUES, POLICE RESEARCH, FEDERAL PRISONERS, EXTERNAL TERRITORY POLICE FORCES, PORNOGRAPHY AND SEX CRIME, PRISON TRENDS, JUVENILES UNDER DETENTION AND LONG TERM PRISONERS. VARIOUS SERVICES PROVIDED BY THE INSTITUTE INCLUDED A COMPUTERIZED INFORMATION SYSTEM ON CRIMINOLOGY AND TRAINING. PROGRESS WAS MADE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE INNOVATIONS, PRESENTENCE REPORTING, CRIME PREVENTION, THE COURT SYSTEM, CRIME INVESTIGATION, TRAINING, AND THE ROLE PLAYED BY LIBRARIANS IN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. FINANCIAL DATA ON THE INSTITUTE ARE TABULATED. APPENDIXES LIST PUBLICATIONS AND PAPERS ISSUED BY THE INSTITUTE. (DEP)
