A DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE DENVER (COLO.) CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM AND ITS AGENCIES IS PRESENTED, ALONG WITH AN OVERVIEW AND ANALYSIS OF CRIME IN THE CITY AND ITS DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS FOR THE YEAR 1977.
Abstract
A SUMMARY OF THE DENVER ADULT AND JUVENILE JUSTICE SYSTEM IS PRESENTED. FLOW CHARTS ILLUSTRATE THE PROCESSING OF OFFENDERS IN THE SYSTEM. THE SYSTEM COMPONENT DESCRIPTIONS PROVIDE INFORMATION ON THE ORGANIZATION AND STAFFING, CASE AND WORKLOADS, PERSONNEL, AND CLIENTELE OF THE LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES, THE PUBLIC DEFENDER, PROSECUTION, THE COURTS, AND ADULT AND JUVENILE CORRECTIONS. AN OVERVIEW OF THE DENVER CRIME PROBLEM IN 1975 AND EARLY 1976 IS PROVIDED. CRIME SPECIFIC ANALYSIS FOR EACH UNIFORM CRIME REPORTS INDEX CRIME AND CATEGORY OF CLASS II CRIMES IS DOCUMENTED. THE NUMBER OF OFFENSES REPORTED TO DENVER POLICE IN 1975 WAS 64,693, AN INCREASE OF 1 PERCENT OVER THE PREVIOUS YEAR. ABOUT TWO-THIRDS OF THESE INCIDENTS WERE SERIOUS OFFENSES, WHICH INCREASED BY 4 PERCENT FROM 1974 TO 1975. CLASS II INCIDENTS DECREASED BY 3 PERCENT. ARRESTS WERE DOWN CONSIDERABLY IN 1976, PARTICULARLY FOR JUVENILES. AN ANALYSIS OF CRIME BY INCIDENT LOCATION AND RESIDENCE OF ARRESTEE IS INCLUDED ALONG WITH PER CAPITA ARREST RATES FOR BOTH JUVENILES AND ADULTS FOR DIFFERENT QUADRANTS OF THE CITY.
