TERRORIST GROUPS, SIGNIFICANT VARIABLES AFFECTING TERRORISM INTERNATIONALLY, AND TARGET GROUPS OF TERRORISM ARE CONSIDERED.
Abstract
THE ONE CONSTANT OF TERRORISM IS THAT IT WILL NOT ENTIRELY DISAPPEAR, EVEN THOUGH TERRORISM AGAINST GOVERNMENT HAS DECLINED AND ACTS OF TERRORISM HAVE DECREASED IN NUMBER. TERRORISM WILL NOT DISAPPEAR BECAUSE IT HAS PROVEN TO BE AN EFFECTIVE TOOL FOR DESTABILIZING POLITICAL PARTIES AND GOVERNMENT AND FOR INJURING OR DESTROYING THE ECONOMIC VIABILITY OF A COUNTRY OR REGION. THE INCIDENCE OF TERRORISM IN LATIN AMERICA, SPAIN, TURKEY, AND THE PHILIPPINES IS DETAILED. SIGNIFICANT VARIABLES IN INTERNATIONAL AND TRANSNATIONAL TERRORISM ARE LISTED IN TABULAR FROM AS THEY RELATE TO TERRORIST GROUP CHARACTERISTICS, TERRORIST EVENT CHARACTERISTICS, LOCAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS, AND GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS. ANOTHER TABLE IDENTIFIES TERRORIST GROUPS IN NORTH AMERICA, LATIN AMERICA, EUROPE, THE MIDDLE EAST AND NORTH AFRICA, SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA, ASIA, AND TRANSREGIONAL AREAS. TARGETS OF TERRORISM, IN GENERAL, ARE BUSINESS EXECUTIVES, PUBLIC OFFICIALS, AND MEMBERS OF THE MILITARY OR LAW ENFORCEMENT SYSTEM. TERRORIST GROUPS WITH THE MOST EXPERTISE AND RESOURCES HAVE NOT YET TURNED TO HIGH-TECHNOLOGY TERRORISM. (DEP)
