Abstract
THE PACKAGE WAS PREPARED BY THE NATIONAL CRIME PREVENTION INSTITUTE. THE FIRST ARTICLE, A POSITION PAPER PREPARED BY AN EVALUATION CONSULTANT TO THE INSTITUTE, OFFERS AN OUTLINE OF THE SKILLS NEEDED BY CRIME PREVENTION OFFICERS TO PERFORM SECURITY CHECKS OF RESIDENCES AND COMMERCIAL ESTABLISHMENTS AND TO RECOMMEND COST-EFFECTIVE SOLUTIONS TO SECURITY PROBLEMS. GUIDELINES FOR EVALUATING CRIME PREVENTION OFFICER'S PERFORMANCE IN ASSESSING BUILDING SECURITY ARE PRESENTED, TOGETHER WITH COMMENTS ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF A MODEL FOR MEASURING THE IMPACT OF CRIME PREVENTION PROGRAMS. CHAPTERS FROM A REPORT PREPARED BY THE ADVISORY GROUP ON PRODUCTIVITY IN LAW ENFORCEMENT OF THE NATIONAL COMMISSION ON PRODUCTIVITY PRESENT OVERVIEWS OF POLICE PRODUCTIVITY AND BARRIERS TO INNOVATION IN POLICE DEPARTMENTS, A DISCUSSION OF PROBLEMS ECOUNTERED IN MEASURING POLICE PRODUCTIVITY, AND EXAMPLES OF POLICE STRATEGIES FOR FOCUSING ON CRIME PREVENTION. DEVELOPMENTS IN PATROL STRATEGIES ARE SURVEYED IN THE INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER FROM A 'PRESCRIPTIVE PACKAGE' ON ROUTINE PATROL PREPARED BY LEAA'S NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF LAW ENFORCEMENT AND CRIMINAL JUSTICE. OTHER CHAPTERS FROM THE SAME REPORT, WHICH WAS BASED ON SITE VISITS TO 26 POLICE DEPARTMENTS, DISCUSS THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF DIRECTED PATROL PROGRAMS IN THE AREAS OF CRIME PREVENTION, DETERRENCE, AND APPREHENSION. DESCRIPTIONS OF PROGRAMS IMPLEMENTED IN THE DEPARTMENTS VISITED ARE INCLUDED.
