THE INTERFACE BETWEEN THE FIELDS OF PSYCHOLOGY AND LAW IS REFLECTED IN PAPERS ON PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE JURY, TRIAL, CRIMINAL, AND CORRECTIONAL PROCESSES, AND RELATED POLICY AND PROFESSIONAL ISSUES.
Abstract
MUCH OF THE MATERIAL IS EXPANDED FROM TALKS PRESENTED AT THE SECOND NATIONAL CONVENTION OF THE AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGY-LAW SOCIETY, HELD IN CHICAGO, ILL., IN SEPTEMBER 1975. THE INTRODUCTORY CHAPTER OFFERS AN OVERVIEW OF THE GROWTH OF INTEREST IN THE RELATIONSHIP OF LAW AND PSYCHOLOGY. IT IS POINTED OUT THAT BOTH FIELDS HAVE BECOME LESS PAROCHIAL AND MORE INCLINED TO SEEK INTERDISCIPLINARY EXPERIENCES. PAPERS CONCERNED WITH PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE JURY AND TRIAL PROCESSES DISCUSS THE IMPLICATIONS OF THREE IMAGES OF THE TRIAL (A RATIONAL EVENT GOVERNED BY RULES, A TEST OF CREDIBILITY, OR A CONFLICT-RESOLVING RITUAL) FOR PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH, PERSUASION DURING VOIR DIRE, THE EFFECT OF THE METHOD OF PRESENTING TRIAL TESTIMONY ON JUROR DECISIONAL PROCESSES, AND AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF 12-AND 6-MEMBER JURIES UNDER UNANIMOUS AND NONUNANIMOUS DECISIONS. PAPERS ON ISSUES IN THE CRIMINAL AND CORRECTIONAL PROCESSES EXAMINE THE POLICE PERSONALITY, ASPECTS OF THE PAROLE EXPERIENCE, CHILDREN'S CONCEPTION OF INTENTIONALITY AND THE CRIMINAL LAW, THE CONCEPT OF DANGEROUSNESS, AND DISCRETION AND JUSTICE IN SENTENCING DECISIONS. OTHER ARTICLES CONCERN THE FOLLOWING POLICY AND PROFESSIONAL ISSUES: COMMUNITY PSYCHOLOGY AND PUBLIC POLICY, FEDERAL REGULATION OF PSYCHOLOGICAL DEVICES, PSYCHOLOGICAL EVIDENCE OF THE FALLIBILITY OF THE EYEWITNESS, PSYCHOLOGISTS IN CHILD CUSTODY, AND THE MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL AS A WITNESS.
