THIS ANTHOLOGY FOCUSES ON THE INCARCERATED OFFENDER, PRISON ATTITUDES AND BEHAVIOR, GENERAL ISSUES CONCERNING CORRECTIONS, AND COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS.
Abstract
A BACKGROUND DESCRIPTION AND COMPARISON OF FEMALE AND MALE DEFENDANTS AND THEIR DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT BY THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM IS FOLLOWED BY AN ANALYSIS OF THE IMPLICATIONS OF INMATE MARITAL STATUS FOR CORRECTIONAL POLICY. THE BLACK REVOLUTIONARY INMATE IS CONSIDERED, AND THE FREQUENCY OF THIS STYLE OF ADJUSTMENT AND FUNCTIONAL VALUE TO THE BLACK OFFENDER ARE DISCUSSED. A PAPER ON STYLES OF EXISTENCE IN A MALE-FEMALE PRISON COMPARES MASCULINE AND FEMININE ALTERNATIVES TO PRISON LIVING AND CONCLUDES THAT PREPRISON AND FELONIOUS IDENTITIES ARE MORE SIGNIFICANT IN SHAPING PRISON BEHAVIOR AND ATTITUDES THAN SEXUAL IDENTITY. THE RELATIVE SIGNIFICANCE OF TWO SETS OF VARIABLES -- CRIMINAL MATURITY, PRISON ROLES, NORMATIVE ALIENATION; AND PRISON TYPE AND INMATE CHARACTERISTICS -ARE EXAMINED IN RELATION TO THE PRISONIZATION PROCESS. THREE CHAPTERS DISCUSS SOME OF THE ECONOMIC PHENOMENA CREATED BY PRISONS. THE USE OF PRISONERS IN PHARMACEUTICAL EXPERIMENTS WITHOUT COMPENSATION IS CONSIDERED ALONG WITH THE ILLEGAL MARKET SITUATION INSIDE PRISONS CAUSED BY ECONOMIC DEPRIVATION OF INMATES. PAID WORK SYSTEMS IN FINLAND AND SWEDEN ALSO ARE DISCUSSED. A CANADIAN STUDY EXAMINES THE UNDERLYING SOCIAL MOTIVATIONS AND POLITICAL IMPLICATIONS OF THE CORRECTIONAL THERAPEUTIC MODEL WHICH USES THE MENTALLY DISORDERED OFFENDER AS SUBJECT. LABELING OF DEFENDANTS IS DISCUSSED IN A STUDY ON THE USE OF 'DANGEROUSNESS' LABELS WITHIN THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. A PAPER PROPOSES A PROCESS OF ATTITUDE CHANGE IN PRISON: THE 'JUST COMMUNITY APPROACH' STRESSES STAFF AND INMATE POLITICAL COLLABORATION IN DEMOCRATIC MANAGEMENT AND PROVIDES A MECHANISM FOR THE LEGITIMATE REEDUCATION OF THE FELONY OFFENDER. A REVIEW CHAPTER ON PAROLE EXAMINES POSITIVE CHANGES SUCH AS THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NATIONAL PAROLE ANALYSIS DATA BASE AND THE TREND TO EVALUATE PAROLE POLICIES. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE COMMUNITY AND CORRECTIONS IS CONSIDERED IN A PAPER CONCERNING COMMUNITY-BASED CORRECTIONS. TABULAR DATA AND BIBLIOGRAPHICAL REFERENCES ARE PROVIDED.
