THE IMPORTANCE OF A CONTINUOUS PROCESS OF KNOWLEDGE BUILDING THROUGH EVALUATIVE RESEARCH IS STRESSED WITH SECTIONS ON EVALUATION METHODOLOGIES, THE POLICY AND POLITICAL CONTEXT OF EVALUATION, AND EVALUATIONS WHICH CAN BE CONDUCTED IN THE PUBLIC INTEREST BY NONPROFESSIONALS. THE SECTION ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE PROVIDES SELECTIONS ON POLICE PATROL, THE DETERRENT EFFECT OF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT, FIELD EXPERIMENTS IN GENERAL DETERRENCE, AND TRANSITIONAL AID FOR RELEASED PRISONERS.
