THIS STATISTICAL AND NARRATIVE REPORT DETAILS THE WORK OF THE FOUR DIVISIONS OF THE BERKELEY, CALIF., POLICE DEPARTMENT, GIVES TRAFFIC AND CRIMINAL OFFENSE DATA, AND SUMMARIZES OTHER POLICE SERVICES RENDERED.
Abstract
THE STATISTICS SHOW THAT THE INCIDENCE OF MAJOR CRIME IN BERKELEY DECREASED FOR THE THIRD CONSECUTIVE YEAR, AND REPORTS THE ACTIVITIES OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE, SERVICE, PATROL, AND DETECTIVE DIVISIONS AND DESCRIBES EFFORTS TO REPLACE SWORN OFFICERS WITH QUALIFIED NONSWORN PERSONNEL WHERE APPROPRIATE. THE FEDERALLY FUNDED PARAPROFESSIONAL PROGRAM, WHICH USES NONSWORN UNIFORMED PERSONNEL TO RESPOND TO NONEMERGENCY CALLS FOR SERVICE, IS DETAILED. AN AID TO THE ELDERLY PROGRAM WAS ALSO FUNDED. THE FOLLOWING ARE TABULATED: EXPENDITURES FOR THE FISCAL YEAR, PLANT AND EQUIPMENT INVENTORIES, PERSONNEL DATA, SUMMARIES OF THE ACTIVITIES OF THE VARIOUS BUREAUS, MOTOR VEHICLE COLLISION AND THEFT DATA, PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENT DATA, STATISTICS ON MAJOR OFFENSES, MAJOR OFFENSES BY TIME AND CENSUS TRACT, DEMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF BOTH ADULTS AND JUVENILES ARRESTED, THE WORK OF THE MISSING PERSONS DIVISION, THE NUMBER OF SUICIDES AND ATTEMPTS HANDLED, AND MISCELLANEOUS SERVICES RENDERED. THE REPORT IS ILLUSTRATED. (GLR)
