Abstract
A U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE REPORT ON CRIME IN RETAILING COVERS THE ECONOMIC IMPACT OF CRIMES AGAINST RETAIL STORES, TYPES OF CRIMES AGAINST BUSINESSES, HOW TO MINIMIZE CRIME LOSSES, EXAMPLES OF BUSINESS ANTICRIME EFFORTS, AND SOURCES OF ASSISTANCE. GUIDELINES FOR ESTABLISHING AN EFFECTIVE SECURITY PROGRAM IN A RETAIL ESTABLISHMENT ARE GIVEN ALONG WITH A REPORT ON METHODS OF THEFT BY CATEGORIES OF EMPLOYEE GROUPS AND ON PREVENTIVE CONTROLS. A REPORT FROM THE GREATER GRAND RAPIDS (MICH.) CHAMBER OF DETECTING SHOPLIFTING, AND TO THE DETENTION, ARREST, AND PROSECUTION OF SHOPLIFTERS. AREAS IN WHICH BUSINESSES ARE VULNERABLE TO SPECIFIC TYPES OF CRIME ARE NOTED, TOGETHER WITH PREVENTIVE MEASURES, IN A REPORT FROM THE FIREMAN'S FUND AMERICAN INSURANCE COMPANIES. ANOTHER REPORT LISTS COMMON TECHNIQUES OF SHOPLIFTERS AND PROCEDURES FOR HANDLING SHOPLIFTING INCIDENTS. OTHER ARTICLES ON SHOPLIFTING INCLUDE A STUDY IN WHICH SHOPLIFTING RATES WERE REDUCED WHEN SIGNS IDENTIFYING FREQUENTLY STOLEN MERCHANDISE WERE POSTED AND A STUDY OF THE CHARACTERISTICS OF BYSTANDERS IN SHOPLIFTING INCIDENTS. AN OVERVIEW OF EMPLOYEE THEFT--DEFINITION, MEASUREMENT, ETIOLOGY, CONTROL--INCLUDES SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER RESEARCH INTO THE PROBLEM. A SECOND ARTICLE ON EMPLOYEE THEFT DESCRIBES STUDIES CONCERNED WITH DEVELOPING INSTRUMENTS TO PREDICT THEFT POTENTIAL IN EMPLOYEES.
