PART 2 OF A 4-PART SERIES, THIS SELF-INSTRUCTIONAL UNIT IS DESIGNED TO PROVIDE THE STUDENT WITH THE GENERAL POLICY AND PROCEDURES TO FOLLOW IN THE PURSUIT, STOPPING, AND APPROACHING OF THE VIOLATOR'S VEHICLE.
Abstract
THIS POLICE TRAINING SERIES IS DIRECTED AT THE ENTRANCE-LEVEL STUDENT OFFICER. THE OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE ARE TO IDENTIFY THE MAJOR VARIABLES A POLICE OFFICER SHOULD CONSIDER WHEN DECIDING WHETHER OR NOT TO PURSUE A TRAFFIC VIOLATOR, INDICATE THE MAIN FACTORS A DEPARTMENTAL PURSUIT POLICY SHOULD INCLUDE, PRESENT THE RECOMMENDED PROCEDURAL STEPS FOR STOPPING TRAFFIC VIOLATORS, AND DISCUSS THE RECOMMENDED PROCEDURAL STEPS FOR STOPPING A FELONY SUSPECT. IN DISCUSSING PURSUIT OF VIOLATORS, PURSUIT POLICY, PURSUIT ASSISTANCE, COMMANDEERING PRIVATE VEHICLES, AND THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFETY ARE CONSIDERED. SELECTING AN APPROPRIATE STOPPING SITE, INITIATING THE STOP, LEAVING THE POLICE VEHICLE, AND APPROACHING THE VIOLATOR'S VEHICLE ARE CONSIDERED IN THE SECTION ON STOPPING TRAFFIC VIOLATORS. DIAGRAMS ARE USED TO SHOW THE RELATIVE POSITIONING OF THE POLICE AND VIOLATOR VEHICLES. IN CONSIDERING STOPPING KNOWN FELONY SUSPECTS, THE FOLLOWING AREAS ARE DISCUSSED: INITIAL CONTRACT; SELECTION OF AN APPROPRIATE ARREST SITE; OVERTAKING THE SUSPECT VEHICLE; EFFECTING THE STOP; AND APPREHENDING THE SUSPECT. DIAGRAMS ARE USED TO SHOW THE POSITIONING OF THE POLICE VEHICLE RELATIVE TO THE SUSPECT'S VEHICLE. TESTS ARE PROVIDED AT THE END OF EACH MAJOR AREA OF CONTENT, WITH ANSWER KEYS INCLUDED.
