A PIONEERING MEDICO-LEGAL CENTER IN SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND, WHICH HOUSES A PUBLIC MORTUARY, CORONER'S COURT, POLICE SURGEONS' SUITES, A UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC PATHOLOGY, AND SUPPORTING FACILITIES, IS DESCRIBED.
Abstract
THE CENTER IS ONE OF THE FIRST ATTEMPTS TO PLACE ALL RELATED MEDICAL AND LEGAL FACILITIES UNDER ONE ROOF. IT IS ALSO NEAR A MAJOR MEDICAL CENTER, THE MAGISTRATES' COURTS BUILDING, POLICE HEADQUARTERS FOR SOUTH YORKSHIRE, AND THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD'S DEPARTMENT OF LAW AND CENTER OF CRIMINOLOGICAL STUDIES. PHOTOGRAPHS ILLUSTRATE THE DESCRIPTION OF THE BUILDING'S FACILITIES. THE CORONER'S COURT IS EQUIPED WITH A FULL RANGE OF AUDIOVISUAL EQUIPMENT PLUS AN AMPLIFICATION SYSTEM FOR THE ELDERLY AND HEARING IMPAIRED. THE PUBLIC MORTUARY, OR MORGUE, HAS SPECIAL PUBLIC ROOMS FOR IDENTIFICATION PROCEEDINGS AS WELL AS A FULLY EQUIPPED POSTMORTEM EXAMINATION THEATER. THIS THEATER IS ALSO USED FOR THE DEPARTMENT OF FORENSIC PATHOLOGY. THE POLICE SURGEON'S SUITES HAVE SPECIAL FACILITIES FOR THE EXAMINATION OF VICTIMS OF SEXUAL CRIME AS WELL AS A VARIETY OF SPECIAL EQUIPMENT FOR OTHER TESTS. THE HOME OFFICE PATHOLOGIST, WHO IS ALSO HEAD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD, OVERSEES THE CENTER'S LABORATORIES, PHOTOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT, EXTENSIVE LIBRARY, TEACHING FACILITIES, AND GENERAL OPERATION.
