THE AMERICAN BAR ASSOCIATION (ABA) HAS DEVELOPED THESE GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES FOR LEGAL ASSISTANT EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO FOLLOW IN ORDER TO BE APPROVED BY THE ABA. INSTRUCTIONS FOR SELF-EVALUATION REPORTS ARE INCLUDED.
Abstract
THE GUIDELINES APPLY TO THE GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAMS, THEIR DEFINITIONS, ORGANIZATION AND ADMINISTRATION, TYPES OF COURSES, ADMISSIONS, AND STATUS OF FACULTY. THE ABA WILL CONSIDER PROGRAMS FOR APPROVAL IF THEY ARE OFFERED BY LAW SCHOOLS, 4-YEAR OR 2-YEAR COLLEGES, UNIVERSITIES, OR ACCREDITED TECHNICAL INSTITUTIONS OR PROPRIETARY SCHOOLS. THE PROGRAMS OFFERED MUST BE AT A POSTSECONDARY INSTRUCTIONAL LEVEL, CONSIST OF AT LEAST 60 SEMESTER HOURS, HAVE A COMPETENT FACULTY WITH EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE IN THE LEGAL ASSISTANT FIELD, AND BE NONDISCRIMINATORY IN ADMITTANCE POLICIES. THE SPONSORING ORGANIZATION MUST ENSURE THAT THE SPACE AND EQUIPMENT, INSTRUCTIONAL AIDS, AND LIBRARY FACILITIES ARE ADEQUATE FOR THE NUMBER OF ENROLLEES. A PROGRAM SEEKING TO BE APPROVED BY THE ABA MUST APPLY TO THE HOUSE OF DELEGATES, SUBMIT TO AN ONSITE VISIT, AND PRESENT A SELF-EVALUATION REPORT TO THE ABA. EVALUATION REPORT SPECIFICATIONS ARE PROVIDED. (DAG)
