SIMPLE AND INEXPENSIVE RECOMMENDATIONS ARE OFFERED CONCERNING THE PREVENTION OF HOME BURGLARY AND THE MINIMIZING OF ITS EFFECT IN A PUBLIC SERVICE BOOKLET ISSUED BY AN INSURANCE COMPANY.
Abstract
WHILE RECOGNIZING THAT NO HOME CAN BE MADE TOTALLY RESISTANT TO BURGLARY, THE CHANCES THAT A HOUSE WILL BE BURGLARIZED CAN BE REDUCED. LIKEWISE THE HOMEOWNER CAN PROTECT HIMSELF FROM THE EFFECTS OF CRIMINAL ACTIVITY. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT ENTRY INTO HOMES BE MADE DIFFICULT FOR THIEVES BY THE HOMEOWNER'S USE OF ADEQUATE LOCKS AND LIGHTING. THE INSTALLATION OF ALARMS MAY BOTH REDUCE THE COST OF HOME INSURANCE AND SERVE TO SCARE AWAY THE CRIMINAL WHO TRIGGERS SUCH A SYSTEM. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE POLICE BE NOTIFIED IF A HOUSE IS TO BE VACANT FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD, AND THAT DURING AN ABSENCE, THE HOMEOWNER SHOULD ARRANGE FOR THE STORAGE OF VALUABLES AND THE MAINTENANCE OF THE HOUSE. SINCE IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO PREVENT ALL BURGLARIES, THE HOMEOWNER IS ADVISED TO HAVE AN ACCURATE INVENTORY OF HIS POSSESSIONS AND ADEQUATE INSURANCE TO COVER THEM. IN A CONFRONTATION WITH A BURGLAR, THE HOMEOWNER'S PRIMARY CONCERN SHOULD BE IN SECURING HIS OWN SAFETY, BUT IF POSSIBLE HE SHOULD TRY TO REMEMBER THE CRIMINAL'S DESCRIPTION. A BURGLARY VICTIM SHOULD IMMEDIATELY NOTIFY THE POLICE. DRAWINGS ILLUSTRATE THE TEXT. A SAMPLE INVENTORY FORM AND SECURITY CHECKLIST ARE PROVIDED. (TWK)
