THE RESULTS OF AN INTERDISCIPLINARY WORKSHOP ON COURT INTERVENTION AND THE REHABILITATION OF JUVENILE DELINQUENTS AT VAUCRESSON, FRANCE, ARE SUMMARIZED AND ANALYZED.
Abstract
THE WORKSHOP ON JUVENILE REHABILITATION WAS DIFFERENT FROM EARLIER CONFERENCES SINCE IT INCLUDED MEMBERS FROM VARIOUS RELATED DISCIPLINES (MEDICAL DOCTORS, PSYCHIATRISTS, PSYCHOLOGISTS, SOCIAL WORKERS, AND INSTRUCTORS). THE FIRST PART OF THE DISCUSSION CONCERNED THE ROLES OF EACH MEMBER OF AN INTERDISCIPLINARY REHABILITATION PROJECT, IN PARTICULAR THE ROLE OF THE JUDGE ON THE FRINGE OF THE EDUCATIONAL TEAM. OTHER CURRENT PROBLEMS IN JUVENILE THERAPY THAT WERE DISCUSSED CONCERNED MISINTERPRETATION OF THE CLIENT'S SYMPTOMS, ADHERENCE TO OUTDATED MODES OF EDUCATION, UNREALISTIC EXPECTATIONS, LACK OF CONTINUITY IN TREATMENT, AND THE CLASH BETWEEN THERAPY AND OTHER ASPECTS OF JUVENILES' LIVES. A PROPOSAL FOR A REFORM OF THE TREATMENT OF JUVENILE OFFENDERS WAS BASED ON THE FOLLOWING PRINCIPLES. FIRST, EDUCATIONAL EFFORTS MUST BE GEARED TO THE JUVENILES' REAL-LIFE SITUATION RATHER THAN TO PRECONCEIVED NOTIONS OF THE CORRECTIONAL ESTABLISHMENT. SECOND, THE EDUCATIONAL SERVICES AND EQUIPMENT MUST BE RESTRUCTURED AND REORGANIZED TO ASSURE THE CONTINUITY OF TREATMENT. THIRD, EFFORTS OF EXPERTS FROM DIFFERENT FIELDS MUST BE COORDINATED TO FURTHER THE GOALS OF REHABILITATION, PREVENTION, AND SOCIAL REINTEGRATION. SEVERAL FOOTNOTES ARE INCLUDED. --IN FRENCH. (SAJ)
