USING 135 MALE PAROLEES FROM SEVERAL STATE CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTIONS, THE DIFFERENTIAL IMPACT OF OCCUPATIONAL REASSESSMENT OPTIONS WAS EXAMINED.
Abstract
THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF THIS STUDY WAS TO DETERMINE THE EXTENT TO WHICH OCCUPATIONAL PREPARATION, TRAINING, AND EDUCATION PRIOR TO CONFINEMENT AND OCCUPATIONAL REASSESSMENT PROGRAMS WHILE CONFINED AFFECT POSTRELEASE LABOR MARKET ACTIVITY AND SOCIALIZATION. THE MAJOR VARIABLES EXAMINED IN THIS STUDY WERE RACE, AGE, YEARS OF SCHOOLING, VOCATIONAL TRAINING, LABOR MARKET EXPERIENCE, AND SKILL LEVEL OF PAST JOBS. THE SAMPLE OF 135 MALE SUBJECTS WAS 54 PERCENT WHITE AND 46 PERCENT NONWHITE. RECORD DATA WERE USED AND THE STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES USED TO ANALYZED THE DATA WERE CORRELATION AND REGRESSION. THE PRIMARY HYPOTHESES IN THE STUDY DEALT WITH THE AREAS OF ACHIEVEMENT, OCCUPATIONAL REASSESSMENT, AND ECONOMIC RESOCIALIZATION. IT WAS FOUND THAT WHITES HAD MORE YEARS OF SCHOOLING AND HAD HIGHER ASPIRATION LEVELS THAN DID NONWHITES. HOWEVER, WHITES WERE FOUND UNABLE TO TRANSLATE ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT, TRAINING, AND OCCUPATIONAL ASPIRATION INTO LABOR MARKET REALITY IN TERMS OF SKILL LEVEL. IT WAS ALSO FOUND THAT ENTRY LEVEL SKILLS FOR NONWHITES WITH TRAINING TENDED TO BE SOMEWHAT HIGHER THAN THOSE FOR WHITES, ALTHOUGH THIS RELATIONSHIP DID NOT REACH TRADITIONAL SIGNIFICANCE LEVELS. IN ADDITION, SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES WITH RESPECT TO TRAINING STATUS, LABOR MARKET ACTIVITY, AND RACE WERE FOUND, BUT THESE HAD LITTLE TO DO WITH ACHIEVEMENT PRIOR TO CONFINEMENT. ALSO, A CORRESPONDENCE IN THE MOVEMENT OF SKILL AND EARNING MEANS WAS FOUND FOR WHITES AND NONWHITES WITHOUT PRIOR TRAINING. OTHER RELATIONSHIP AMONG VARIABLES ARE DETAILED. TABLES AND FIGURES ARE PROVIDED. LIST OF REFERENCES IS INCLUDED. (AUTHOR ABSTRACT MODIFIED -- MLC)
