Abstract
THE PAPER PRESENTS SEVEN GENERAL OBJECTIVES AS FOLLOWS: (1) ACHIEVING QUALIFICATION FOR SOME TYPE OF WORK, AWARENESS OF WHAT IT IS, AND CONFIDENCE IN ONE'S ABILITY TO PERFORM ADEQUATELY; (2) KNOWING HOW TO ACQUIRE AND USE KNOWLEDGE; (3) MASTERING COMMUNICATION SKILLS; (4) KNOWING ONE'S VALUES AND BEING AWARE THAT OTHER CULTURES MAY HOLD DIFFERENT VALUES; (5) LEARNING HOW TO COOPERATE WITH OTHERS IN ORDER TO FORMULATE AND ACT ON SOLUTIONS TO PROBLEMS: (6) DEVELOPING AN AWARENESS AND CONCERN FOR CONTEMPORARY EVENTS, ISSUES, AND PROBLEMS; AND (7) LEARNING TO VIEW THE COLLEGE EXPERIENCE AS A UNIFIED WHOLE. IT IS ALSO SUGGESTED THAT THEMES SUCH AS CRITICAL THINKING AND ATTITUDE DEVELOPMENT BE GIVEN ATTENTION BY EDUCATORS IN SECURITY. MCGRATH'S CAREER AND LIBERAL EDUCATION OBJECTIVES ARE EMBRACED AND RECOMMENDED FOR INCORPORATION INTO THE SECURITY CURRICULUM. MCGRATH URGED ORIENTATION TO THE PROFESSION, VOCATIONAL FLEXIBILITY, UNDERSTANDING PRINCIPLES, AND CULTIVATION OF PROFESSIONAL ATTITUDES AND MOTIVATION. THE OBJECTIVES LISTED ARE SIMILAR TO OBJECTIVES FOUND IN ALMOST ANY LIBERALS ARTS AND PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION CURRICULUM. IT IS ARGUED THAT THE SECURITY CURRICULUM AT THE BACHELOR'S AND MASTER'S LEVEL SHOULD, TO A CONSIDERABLE EXTENT, BE A LIBERAL ARTS AND A PUBLIC ADMINISTRATION CURRICULUM. THE INCLUSION OF A FEW WELL CONCEIVED SECURITY COURSES IS ALSO RECOMMENDED, BUT THE BROAD APPROACH IS URGED. GLOSSARY AND FOOTNOTES ARE PROVIDED. (MLC)
