REGIONAL INSTITUTES THAT PROVIDED STAFF DEVELOPMENT TRAINING FOR 70 MANAGERS OF COMMUNITY RESIDENTIAL CENTERS ARE EVALUATED.
Abstract
THE FOUR INSTITUTES WERE HELD UNDER THE AUSPICES OF THE NATIONAL TRAINING INSTITUTE, WITH THE SPONSORSHIP OF THE INTERNATIONAL HALFWAY HOUSE ASSOCIATION AND FUNDING FROM THE WASHINGTON STATE LAW AND JUSTICE OFFICE AND FROM LEAA. ELEVEN-DAY INSTITUTES WERE HELD IN BURLINGAME, CALIF., AND CRANSTON, R.I.; EIGHT-DAY INSTITUTES IN RICHMOND, VA., AND NEW ORLEANS, LA. PARTICIPANTS INCLUDED MANAGERS FROM HALFWAY HOUSES, GROUP HOMES, AND OTHER COMMUNITY-BASED RESIDENTIAL TREATMENT PROGRAMS FOR ADULT AND JUVENILE OFFENDERS, ALCOHOLICS AND DRUG ABUSERS, AND MENTALLY OR EMOTIONALLY DISTURBED ADULTS AND CHILDREN. THE REPORT INCLUDES AN ANALYSIS OF THE PARTICIPANTS, THEIR TEST SCORES BEFORE AND AFTER THE INSTITUTES, AND EVALUATIONS OF THE INSTITUTE BY FACULTY AND PARTICIPANTS. IT IS CONCLUDED THAT THE INSTITUTES WERE EFFECTIVE AND WELL RECEIVED. THE FOLLOWING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE INSTITUTES ARE OFFERED: (1) PARTICIPANTS SHOULD HAVE SIMILAR JOB ROLES AND LEVELS OF MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY; (2) EVALUATORS SHOULD OBTAIN INFORMAL FEEDBACK FROM TRAINEES; (3) ALTERNATIVES TO THE LECTURE-OPEN DISCUSSION FORMAT (PANELS, PARTICIPANT INVOLVEMENT, PROBLEMSOLVING GROUPS) SHOULD BE EXPLORED; (4) MORE MEMBERS OF MINORITY GROUPS SHOULD BE INCLUDED ON THE FACULTY; AND (5) THE APPROACH TO THE TOPIC OF DRUG DEPENDENCE SHOULD BE REASSESSED AS SHOULD THE PRACTICALITY OF SEGMENTS ON EVALUATION, RESEARCH, AND TREATMENT MODALITIES.
