Abstract
IN PRESENTING AN EXAMINATION OF THE PROBLEM OF FAMILY VIOLENCE, FOR AN AUDIENCE OF EIGHTH GRADE TO COLLEGE, BOTH THE CAUSES AND THE POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO THE PROBLEM ARE DISCUSSED. ALTHOUGH THE TRUE EXTENT OF THIS SOCIAL CRISIS HAS NOT BEEN UNDERSTOOD, FAMILY VIOLENCE IS PERVASIVE. THE PRESENTATION STRESSES THAT VIOLENCE OCCURS IN FAMILIES WHICH OTHERWISE APPEAR TO BE NORMAL. SUBJECTS COVERED IN THE FILM AND CASSETTES ARE THE DYNAMICS OF FAMILY VIOLENCE, CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT, BATTERED WIVES, AND ADOLESCENT ABUSE. THE PRESENTATION CONCLUDES THAT THE EXTENT OF FAMILY VIOLENCE HAS BEEN UNDERESTIMATED BECAUSE OF THE RELUCTANCE OF OUTSIDERS TO INTERFERE IN 'FAMILY BUSINESS.' PROGRAMS DEALING WITH THE SPECIFIC PROBLEM OF CHILD ABUSE APPEAR TO BE MORE EFFECTIVE WHEN THEY STRENGTHEN THE FAMILY, RATHER THAN SEPARATE ITS MEMBERS. NONVIOLENT METHODS OF SETTLING FAMILY PROBLEMS ARE EMPHASIZED. CLASSROOM ACTIVITIES AND A BIBLIOGRAPHY ARE PRESENTED. REVIEW QUESTIONS AND FILMSTRIP SCRIPTS ON EACH SUBJECT ARE PROVIDED IN THE TEACHER'S GUIDE. FOR INDIVIDUAL CASSETTES AND FILMSTRIP, SEE NCJ 56043-56046. (TWK)
