BASIC INFORMATION ON HANDGUN SELECTION AND MARKSMANSHIP IS PRESENTED IN AN ILLUSTRATED TEXT DIRECTED TO LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS AND OTHER USERS OF GUNS.
Abstract
OPENING CHAPTERS COVER THE HISTORY OF WEAPONRY, CONTEMPORARY WEAPONRY NEEDS, GUIDELINES FOR SELECTING A HANDGUN (INCLUDING DETAILED CONSIDERATION OF THE ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF SPECIFIC GUNS), AND FIREARMS SAFETY RULES. THE REMAINDER OF THE TEXT IS DEVOTED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SHOOTING SKILL. INCLUDED IS INFORMATION ON STANCE, GUN GRIP, SIGHTING, TRIGGER SQUEEZE, PRINCIPLES OF MARKSMANSHIP, 'DRY' FIRING PRACTICE, TARGET RANGE PRACTICE, IDENTIFYING AND OVERCOMING BAD HABITS, TIMED AND RAPID FIRING, FIRING WITH BOTH THE LEFT AND RIGHT HAND, AND FIRING FROM VARIOUS POSITIONS (KNEELING, SITTING, PRONE, BEHIND A BARRICADE). PHOTOGRAPHS ILLUSTRATE THE TECHNIQUES AND POSITIONS DESCRIBED IN THE TEXT. PARTICULAR ATTENTION IS DIRECTED TO THE CONCEPT OF 'BODY PHENOMENON,' WHICH IN PRACTICE MEANS THAT THE BEST WAY TO SHOOT IN MOST COMBAT SITUATIONS IS TO KEEP BOTH EYES OPEN AND TO STAND ALMOST SQUARELY FACING THE TARGET. THREE COMBAT COURSES -- TARGET PRACTICE INSTRUCTIONS, INCLUDING SCORES REQUIRED TO QUALIFY AS A MARKSMAN, SHARPSHOOTER, EXPERT, OR MASTER -- ARE APPENDED TO THE TEXT, TOGETHER WITH INSTRUCTIONS AND PLANS FOR BUILDING A PORTABLE BARRICADE AND TARGET FRAME, AND A GLOSSARY.
